Advice from Cisco on Securing 5G Networks

As part of National Cyber Security Awareness Month, the EDGE360 team is highlighting technologies that are changing the future and the security that must accompany them. At Cisco Live, Mike Geller, Principal Architect with Cisco Systems, Inc., explored how 5G is growing, what we can expect to see in the future, and how to secure these networks in the Applying Security in a 5G World session.

“Some people say 5G is barely here,” said Geller. But he explained that 5G is seeing greater usage today and will continue to grow in the coming years. This highlights the need for strong security as its usage grows. Geller said that even though this technology is new, it’s best to approach security with the best practices we’ve already learned, including using secure routers, switches, and firewalls.

By using Cisco security technology, threat detection and prevention become visible and actionable. With automated threat detection, it’s easier to respond, recover, and protect data. “You need to pay attention” to the layered approach of how security needs to be implemented,” explained Geller. 5G is complex and the potential threats that accompany it are, too.

By using security best practices, such as multi-factor identification, secure roaming interfaces, and enhanced visibility networks, 5G users can work to ensure security. Geller explained that understanding threat patterns and types is the first step to ensuring a secure environment. Network infiltration, denial of service, and app manipulation top the list.

As 5G becomes more widely used, it’s vital that the networks, systems, and data are secure. Understanding the vulnerabilities of the technology makes prevention attainable. “Security is not a game anymore. This is my money, this is my business,” said Geller.
