National Cybersecurity Awareness Month (NCSAM) 2020 is underway, and this year we must think about cybersecurity in the IT channel on a different level than ever before. Between an increasingly disparate workforce with potentially more vulnerable network access, and cyber threats that grow more sophisticated every day, having a cybersecurity plan in place is crucial.

In the spirit of NCSAM, the EDGE360 team wanted to learn more about the current cybersecurity landscape in the channel and where it’s headed, so we spoke with Marc Nagao, Americas Security Business Development Manager for Cisco, and Terry Yani, Cisco’s Global Security Sales Organization Lead for Distribution. Nagao and Yani both offered valuable insights about the path forward for the Cisco community with regards to cybersecurity and important information that VARs and their customers should keep in mind when mapping out their strategy for the coming year.

Yani pointed to two important trends he’s seen in customer priorities: the desire for simplicity and the need for automation. “Security has gotten incredibly complex over the years and they need to be able to effectively implement security policy,” he stated.

Both Nagao and Yani emphasized the importance of being proactive when it comes to cyber-attacks. “The people that are engaging in ransomware attacks are not standing on their laurels either,” Nagao remarked. “They’re evolving as much as everybody else is in terms of fighting those threats. I would say don’t just wait for something to happen.”

No matter the means, Yani and Nagao are certain that changes in perspective on workplace productivity and operational best practices are on the horizon for the channel. Yani noted, “If there is a silver lining, we’re going to see the world change, and hopefully for the positive in these [ways].”
